Congratulations to BCID Professional Member Adrian van Wijk, BCID Provisional Member Sandy Lam and the rest of the team at JDi Design on their recent International Design Excellence Award received for their work in developing the TazzyTotes™ Produce Bag.

News Release:

JDi Design Inc., a design firm pioneering eco product development has been recognised for its commitment to design excellence with the award of the prestigious International Design Excellence Award from the IDSA. (Industrial Designers Society of America)

The TazzyTotes™ Produce Bag received a Bronze IDEA Eco Design Award for its eco chic solution for instore produce bags. JDi Design’s winning design is 100% recyclable and embodies ecological principles at every stage of its lifecycle. It also features a unique bin label and an erasable marker for writing names or bulk bin numbers with a non-toxic dry erase pen, eliminating the need for instore sealing and tagging. The produce bag is part of a modular system designed around everyday shopping needs, from the moment you go shopping until you finally reach home.

The design team, Adrian van Wijk, Sandy Lam, Sam Richards and Jamie McDonald from Vancouver, British Columbia, focused on identifying gaps in the emerging trend to use reusable bags. The result is an international ecological and economic success. “It is very satisfying to see the thought and care we put into a seemly simple product receiving international recognition as well as market place success”, says Adrian van Wijk, Design Director at JDi Design. The TazzyTotes products have been on the market since June 2009.

About JDi Design Inc.
JDi Design is a group of design professionals incorporated in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
About TazzyTotes

In celebration of World Industrial Design Day on 29 June 2010, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) invites designers from around the globe to initiate events reflecting this year’s theme:

“Industrial Design: Humane solutions for a resilient world”

Above image: winning student poster design by:Ivan Orin Vrkas & Bojan Kristofic
Icsid Member School: University of Zagreb, Croatia

This topic was selected to facilitate collaboration within the industrial design community with the goal of producing tangible solutions to world problems.

“This theme stems from the immense response received from our recent ‘Uniting Designers in Disaster’ initiative launched on Facebook on 22 January in light of the disaster in Haiti and conveys the important role industrial design can play in global issues,” stated President Mark Breitenberg.

While the theme for WIDD 2010 calls on the design community to contribute their knowledge and skill, this day of observance is significant in fostering a global understanding of industrial design and all that it encompasses.

How to take part in the activities

Below are a few ideas that might inspire you as you plan to commemorate the occasion:

* Send a message to your members, students and contacts in your network announcing that WIDD will take place on 29 June, 2010.
* Distribute a press release to your media network expressing your support for WIDD.
* Include a WIDD component to an existing event taking place around the same date, such as a design exhibition, conference or workshop.
* Engage with local, regional and national levels of government to highlight industrial design’s value for economic and social growth.
* Host your own original event (workshop, celebration, educational conference, etc) in the honour of WIDD.
* Support WIDD by creating a social media community to discuss all things industrial design

By taking part in the World of Industrial Design Day celebrations, you and/or your organisation will have contributed to the overall advancement of industrial design through nurturing a global understanding for our discipline.
