June 29 World Industrial Design Day

February 23rd, 2008

World Industrial DEsign Day

While there are many events that promote the profession of industrial design, World Industrial Design Day is the first international observance created uniquely to provide an occasion to highlight the merits of the profession and its impact on the quality of life.Marked by Icsid’s anniversary on June 29, World Industrial Design Day is a day to actively engage design professionals and design enthusiasts to explore their creativity, imagination, vision and passion in recognition of the role of industrial design and designers in our society. We hope that you will join us in celebrating WIDD on June 29, 2008.

Below are a few ideas that might inspire you as you plan to commemorate the occasion:

Send a message to your members, students and contacts in your network announcing that WIDD will take place on June 29, 2008.

Distribute a press release to your media network expressing your support for WIDD.

Include a WIDD component to an existing event taking place around the same date, such as a design exhibition, conference or workshop.

Engage with local, regional and national levels of government to highlight industrial design’s value for economic and social growth.

Host your own original event in honour of WIDD.

Remember that your observance of WIDD can be as simple or as elaborate as you choose to make it – it’s a chance to show the world what industrial design means to you.

Over the coming months, you will receive additional information on ways to celebrate WIDD and news on what the Icsid Secretariat is doing to mark the occasion. By taking part in any way, your organisation will have contributed to the overall advancement of industrial design through nurturing a global understanding for our discipline.

Sören Schou Receives Reddot Design Award

January 2nd, 2008

BCID Professional Member Sören Schou has been recognized with a Reddot Design award for his Tealight Lantern SWVL 3.0

via Press Release:
For its outstanding design concept Tealight Lantern SWVL 3.0 by Sören Schou has received one of the most coveted
design prizes worldwide: the ‘red dot’. This quality seal for good design is awarded annually in the international ‘red
dot design award’ competition by a jury of experts and only goes to design concepts with outstanding design
concepts. It is a confident prediction of how the future will become.
Unique in concept and execution, the SWVL 3.0 Tealight Lantern excels through cheerful innovation and sparkling
sophistication.

SWVL 3.0 is a revolutionary tealight lantern, combining two distinct mood-setting illumination qualities in one
single lantern. Whether you prefer the direct light from a single flickering flame or the warm ambient luminescence
of a frosted surface, SWVL 3.0 gives you the choice; one half of the glass lens is frosted, while the other is clear. The
tealight is suspended and allowed to pivot inside the glass cylinder. By rotating - or swiveling - the lantern, the
candle shines brightly and un-obstructed through the clear glass, or presents a soft and warm glow through the
frosted half.

ICSID APPOINTS NEW EXECUTIVE BOARD (Nov5, 2007)

ICSID APPOINTS NEW EXECUTIVE BOARD
Professor Carlos Hinrichsen is inducted as President
Download PDF: Icsid appoints ExecBoard07-09_final.pdf

Montreal, November 5, 2007 – The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) announced the results of the elections held on October 22 during its 25th General Assembly for the appointment of the organisation’s executive board for the 2007-2009 term. The international governing board, consisting of eleven prominent design authorities will be lead by Prof. Carlos Hinrichsen as the new president. The Icsid Executive Board for the 2007-2009 term consists of the following individuals: President Prof. Carlos Hinrichsen (Chile), President-Elect Dr. Mark Breitenberg (USA), Treasurer Brandon Gien (Australia), Wen-long Chen (Taiwan), Leimei Julia Chiu (Japan), Martin Darbyshire (United Kingdom), Prof. Lorraine Justice (China), Dr. Darlie Koshy (India), Jae-jin Shim (Korea), Kazuo Tanaka (Japan) and Judit Vàrhelyi (Hungary). This General Assembly was marked by the organisation’s 50th anniversary – a milestone achievement for an organisation that continues to contribute to the present and future well being of industrial design and its unique membership network. “From a global perspective, Icsid’s success during the past 50 years comes from its universal outlook, as well as its ability to serve local and regional markets,” commented Prof. Hinrichsen. “We will continue to make our network stronger, make Icsid regional meetings more vibrant and Icsid Interdesigns better known and understood by world leaders and funding agencies.”Prof. Hinrichsen shared his vision for the upcoming term and announced his intentions to continue with the successful work set out by the previous board to move Icsid to the next level of growth and co-operation within the international design community.Much like his predecessor Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, Prof. Hinrichsen intends to work to encourage and strengthen the dialogue with other international organisations. This term will also be marked by another significant achievement for design with regards to the development of the International Design Alliance (IDA), as Icsid and the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda), prepare to welcome a third member – the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI), to the strategic alliance that focuses on multidisciplinary design.

Prof. Hinrichsen also noted, expert predictions on emerging economies from China, India, Korea and Vietnam that show that these countries will continue to invest in infrastructure and education and develop the necessary institutions for the new world to become more technologically advanced. This demand for infrastructure will therefore generate significant opportunities for design industries, where Icsid can play an important role as the facilitator between these countries and the design community as the value of these countries increase on a global platform.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Hinrichsen explained that his commitment for the term could be summarised by the following: collaboration, networking and initiatives focusing on local matters or topics. These will build on the organisation’s strategic direction for future issues of regional impact and of global significance.
