Call for Entries - BC Creative Achievement Awards

Deadline for Submission to the BC Creative Achievement Awards is December 15th http://www.bcachievement.com 

From the BC Creative Achievement Awards Website:  “The 2007 British Columbia Creative Achievement Awards will recognize up to five individuals from British Columbia’s outstanding applied art and design community. Artists and designers who work in jewelry, glass, wood, fibre, clay and metal or such areas as, but not limited to, textiles, furniture, musical instrument-making, weaving, ceramics, book binding, paper, fashion and industrial design are eligible to submit their work. 

Up to three awards will be presented to an established artist/designer and at least one award will be presented to an emerging artist/designer. “Emerging” reflects those at an early stage in their career who have completed their basic training, formal or informal, and have created a modest independent body of work. “Established” reflects those who have created a significant independent body of work over a number of years and who have reached a level of achievement and recognition.”

Special Lecture in Design 2006 - Elizabeth Sanders

Liz Sanders Liz is trained in Psychology and Anthropology and holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology. She is a pioneer in the use of participatory research methods in the field of design Some of her clients have included Apple, Coca Cola, Compaq, Hasbro, IBM, Intel, Kodak, Microsoft, Motorola, Procter & Gamble, Thermos, 3M, and Xerox. Liz speaks about and teaches human-centered research and design to clients, colleagues and students around the world. She is coming to speak at Emily Carr as part of an initiative to increase the awareness and practice of human-centered and participatory design methods. 

Ms. Sanders is currently the President of the consulting firm MakeTools. She serves as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Industrial, Interior and Visual Communication Design at The Ohio State University. She is also on the Board of Advisors for the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University.

Taxpayer Information Project - Design Consultants

The BCID has been invited to participate in a government initiative to clarify federal and provincial tax information documentation specifically affecting the Design Consultant industries. If your business has had issues or concerns related to PST and/or GST, this is your opportunity to be heard. The deadline for response is August 30th, 2006. Overview
The Ministry of Small Business and Revenue is currently working on the Taxpayer Information Project (TIP). The goal of TIP is to rewrite and create new materials in plain language that explain how provincial taxes apply to specific industries. As part of TIP, a suite of informational products has been developed that will make provincial tax information clear and easy to understand, more accessible, and focuses on the needs of our customers. To ensure that we meet the needs of your industry, we are asking you to participate in the consultation process with us. The first consultation is to solicit your suggestions/comments on the attached proposed outline of topics we are considering for our public information materials: <>. Step 2
For the second consultation, we will send you a copy of the final draft of the proposed public information materials for your review. As feedback from your industry is important to us, I would appreciate you soliciting feedback from your membership as you see fit.

For both consultations, we welcome all suggestions you may have. However, if your suggestion requires new policy, or a change in current policy or legislation, we will put you in contact with the appropriate area of the ministry that can assist you. Closing the Loop - Deadline Extended

The Deadline for entries to the FW Sustainable Design>>Closing the Loop Competition has been extended until June 7, 2006.

The competition is open to all Canadian residents. Winning entries will be publicly exhibited at the UBC School of Architecture Gallery from June 16th-18th and at the Vancouver Public Library from June 19th – 23rd.

These exhibitions are in conjunction with the 2006 Festival of Architecture and the World Urban Forum being held in

ECI Graduation Exhibition

BCID members are invited to attend the Emily Carr Institute’s annual Grad-Show Industry Preview Night this Friday May 5 from 7-9pm. A few BCID members may pause for a refreshment or two at the Arts Club Lounge after the event - please feel free to join us there.As in past years, BCID will give an “award of excellence” to a deserving student. The student will receive a certificate, a hardcover book on design, and publication of their graduation project in the upcoming issue of the BCID Bulletin. All Professional and Provisional members are invited to submit their votes on the project or projects that they think merit consideration.The 2006 Graduation exhibition runs from May 7th to May 22nd.
