Junior Industrial Designer

We are seeking a young, talented, idea-driven Industrial Designer to join our expanding design studio.

At StarFish Industrial designers form an integral part of the team and are involved at all stages of the product development process. We understand that intelligent design is good business and value the thinking and abilities that a good industrial designer can bring to the table. We strive to create products where engineering function, human interface and visual identity are carefully balanced to create results that are more than just skin-deep.

As part of our team you will have the opportunity to ask difficult questions, use good strategy, apply innovative technologies and follow through with creative, well engineered, award-winning medical device designs. You will collaborate with senior designers, engineers and physicists in a vibrant multi-disciplinary team. We are not interested in producing ‘pretty boxes’ but rather thoughtful and engaging products designed from the inside out.

StarFish Medical is based in Victoria, British Columbia, perfectly positioned to take advantage of all the recreational activities that the West Coast has to offer.  Our offices are located just off the Galloping Goose cycle trail, a 10 minute ride along the water from the harbour and downtown core.  We offer a lively, open plan, collaborative environment within a 6500 sq. ft facility and all the tools necessary to bring great ideas to fruition.

Qualifications
• BA, BS or MS in Industrial Design

Experience
• 1-3 years of experience in a multi-disciplinary, product design consulting environment. This is a junior position working under senior team members.
• Experience developing technical consumer/ medical products
• Good understanding of injection-molding and other plastic production processes a plus

Specific Skills (Candidates must clearly demonstrate the following)
• Good planning and communication skills
• Strong analytical and problem-solving ability
• A great design eye and sense of proportion
• Excellent sketching ability (idea generation; problem-solving; form and identity development)
• Photoshop (good rendering and general skills)
• Illustrator (good layout and rendering/ drawing skills)
• 3D CAD (SolidWorks ability is essential; Rhino would be a plus)
• Good model-making abilities would be a plus
